Pavement Inventory

The first step in establishing inventory is to identify and define your network.

Network - A group of pavements to be managed together.
Example: (A city's roadway pavements.)

Once your network is defined, the branches and sections are ready to be defined.

Branch - A part of a network that has a well-defined function.
Example: Roadway, parking lot, runway, etc.)

Section - The smallest management unit within a branch.
Considerations when defining sections: (Pavement type, last construction date, shoulder, condition, traffic, etc.)

KMS will meet with the municipality prior to inventory definition and data collection to review available data and to discuss pavement sectioning in greater detail. It should be noted that KMS practices standard sectioning techniques such as physical boundaries and station references when defining a pavement section.

Pavement Inspection

The pavement evaluation process is based on the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) methodology. The PCI for roads and parking lots became an ASTM standard (D6433-99) in 1999 and works hand in hand with the Micro PAVER™ pavement management system. This standardized methodology is referenced within the Micro PAVER™ distress manuals for roads and parking lots. It should be noted that asphalt, concrete and un-surfaced pavements all have their own unique distress manual and will be used accordingly. The manual inspection process as performed by KMS staff can be defined as follows.

Using the random sampling method, 2500 square foot representative samples will be determined within each pavement section. The sample unit (s) will then be manually surveyed to identify all distress types, their severity levels and quantities as defined within the distress manuals. This data is first recorded and then entered into the PCI module of the Micro PAVER™ pavement management system.

Work History

The work history component provides a place for all past and future road improvements to be documented. This should not be confused with a work order component as the work history component is not intended for this purpose. It is intended to simply store project and work information (Major M&R and Localized) for all of your pavement sections.

Micro PAVER™ boasts several reporting tools within the system including:

Standard Reports - Branch Listing, Work History, Branch Condition and Section Condition reports. These reports are non-customizable and are powered by Crystal Reports

User Defined Reports - Allows the user to query the entire Micro PAVER™ database to produce a fully customizable report. These also allow the user to create and save multiple reports. In addition, it is possible to export the generated reports into a Microsoft Excel file for further customization.

Summary Charts - Provides the user with the ability to create charts and graphs based on selecting a desired X and Y axis.

Prediction Modeling

The essence of the prediction modeling component is to identify and group similar pavements. When establishing these groups, KMS will look at variables such as pavement type, pavement use, traffic patterns, weather exposure, and other factors that affect pavement performance. The historical data on pavement conditions can be used to build models that accurately predict the future performance of a group of pavements that possess similar attributes. This model of pavement life is assigned a name, and in the Micro PAVER™ vocabulary it is referred to as a "family."

Condition Analysis

The Condition Analysis component allows the agency to view the condition of the entire pavement network, or any specified subset of the network. The analysis is a projection which is based on prior inspection data, interpolated values between previous inspections and projected conditions based on the previously mentioned family models. The output consists of several comprehensive reports that can easily be exported into a Microsoft Excel format, as well as some great GIS views!

The M&R Planning component is a tool for planning, scheduling, budgeting and analyzing alternative pavement maintenance and repair (M&R) activities. In a nut shell, this is the ultimate component for providing those various "what if" scenarios we all long for in just a matter of a few minutes! The M&R Plan utilizes basic inventory data combined with inspection information, maintenance policies, maintenance costs and predictions about future pavement condition. Whether you are looking to see the complete consequence of a specific budget over a specified period of time or you are interested in reaching a specific condition over a specified period of time, the M&R Planning tool has the answer! Just as the Condition Analysis component, it should also be mentioned that the output consists of several comprehensive reports that can easily be exported into a Microsoft Excel format, as well as some great GIS views!
